TENDONG DECHEN SAMLING GONPA

Dechen Samling Tamang Gonpa was established by Gomchen Pema Chewang Tamang (founding member of Tibetology) of Bumtar in 1955. In the year 1945, he went to Tibet and became a disciple of YongZin Rimpoche, where he met another disciple Kunzang Dichen (Queen of Sikkim). Both studied under the Rimpoche for some time. After spending eight years in Tibet, he returns back to Sikkim, learning about his return the Queen invited him to the palace and asked him to share his knowledge for public benefit. Chogyal Tashi Namgyal, then the king allotted ten acres of land at Tendong hill for a hermitage. the queen presented a statue of Guru Padmasambhava. the present structure was built in 1955 with the king donating GCI seats for the roof.
